Germany, U.S. sail into knockout stages in Recife rain

U.S. players acknowledge supporters at the end of their 2014 World Cup Group G soccer match against Germany at the Pernambuco arena in Recife June 26, 2014.
The Germans dominated the game with Juergen Klinsmann's team, with their backs against the wall, creating very few chances.
The breakthrough came after 55 minutes when Tim Howard parried out a Per Mertesacker header but Mueller collected the loose ball on the edge of the area and superbly side-footed into the bottom corner.
"For once I scored a beautiful goal. If I don't watch out I'll become a legend? OK, I won't watch out," Mueller told ZDF Television after being told he had outscored Diego Maradona in World Cups.
"We are ready for the knockout stage. We keep working hard and we are full of team spirit."
The game had been threatened by a torrential downpour in the north-eastern city of Recife on Thursday morning but the heavy rain that hampered the preparations of fans and players alike eased to a drizzle as kickoff approached.
Despite the fact that both sides only needed a draw to qualify there was no shortage of attacking intent in the lively opening exchanges, with Mueller going close early on from Lukas Podolski's low cross.
Both sides flew into challenges in the battle for supremacy in midfield, and U.S. coach Juergen Klinsmann and his German counterpart Joachim Loew will be glad the referee didn't wave the yellow card more often as they head for the knockout stages.
The Americans had several chances of their own but lacked the pace and guile necessary to unduly worry German goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.
"Everyone said we had no chance, but we took the chance and we move on and now we really want to prove a point," U.S. coach Klinsmann said.
"The commitment was great, I wish we had more possession and created more chances but maybe we are saving that for the next one.
"It is huge, huge step and now we can’t wait for the round of 16."
Obama administration announces new steps to stem flow of immigrants at Texas border

Detainees sleep at a U.S. Customs and Border Protection processing facility Wednesday in Brownsville, Tex.
The steps, aimed at those entering from Mexico, include adding more immigration judges to process a backlog of asylum claims and to more quickly deport adults whose cases are rejected. New detention facilities are also being opened for families awaiting hearings, and ankle monitoring bracelets will be used to keep tabs on them, officials said.
The moves mark a recognition by the administration that the unexpected influx of tens of thousands of immigrant children has become a serious humanitarian and political crisis. Since October, 52,000 unaccompanied minors and 39,000 adults with children have been apprehended along the Mexican border — a much higher proportion than normal.
The U.S. government is giving rare access inside the facilities where thousands of unaccompanied immigrant children are being held after they were caught crossing the border from Mexico.
The surge has become an unexpected flash point in Washington’s immigration debate, making it even less likely that House Republicans will support comprehensive reform legislation this year.
Administration officials had previously said that the main cause of the influx was an escalation of gang violence and poverty in Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras. But the new measures Friday represented an acknowledgment that there is a widespread perception in Central America that women and children who enter the United States illegally would be permitted to stay.
Vice President Biden discussed the crisis during a stop in Guatemala on Friday. President Obama also phoned Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto on Thursday to emphasize that migrants will not be eligible for legal status or citizenship.
Amid reports of children crammed into border patrol stations, Republicans have faulted the administration’s border policies for being weak and contributing to rumors of sanctuary in the United States. The situation presents a serious challenge for Obama as he considers whether to use executive power to expand the number of undocumented immigrants who can stay in the country without penalty.
Cecilia Muñoz, the White House’s director of domestic policy, said that criminal smuggling networks are deliberately spreading “misinformation” to recruit clients for the trip north.
“This is being put forward in a very deliberate way,” Muñoz said during a conference call with reporters. “The vice president’s efforts and the administration’s effort is to make sure people have accurate information and to push back on misinformation that is being spread and is contributing to the problem.”
In addition to tougher enforcement efforts, the administration announced Friday that it would invest $9.6 million to help Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras repatriate those sent home from the United States, along with new aid to help improve security in those countries.
Although the administration took steps to expedite the removal of adults who cross the border illegally, officials said they are unable to follow similar procedures for the larger pool of children who are showing up at the border without their parents. Federal law requires the children to be handed over to the Department of Health and Human Services within 72 hours and released to family members or other guardians with orders to appear at an immigration hearing later.
But immigration experts said many youth do not show up for their hearings, intent on remaining in the country illegally. Administration officials declined to release figures on how many young migrants have appeared before immigration judges.
In a meeting with Guatemala President Otto Pérez Molina, Biden emphasized the dangers of children being placed in the hands of smuggling networks and said that the United States “recognizes that a key part of the solution to this problem is to address the root causes of this immigration in the first place. Especially poverty, insecurity and the lack of the rule of law, so the people can stay and thrive in their own communities, so a parent doesn’t feel so desperate.”
The crisis has placed Obama — who has called immigration reform his top second-term priority — in a difficult bind.

Since taking office, he has tried to project a tough image on deportations in an attempt to persuade Republicans to support comprehensive reform legislation that includes a path to citizenship for millions of undocumented immigrants.
That approach has led to mounting criticism from Democrats and immigration advocates, who note that more than 2 million undocumented immigrants have been deported during his tenure. His decision in 2012 to defer the deportations of young immigrants brought to the country by their parents before 2007 won raves from advocates but has been criticized by Republicans for helping contribute to the perception abroad that U.S. policies are weak.
Obama is weighing potential administrative action to further slow deportations if Congress fails to reach a legislative deal by the end of the summer. But the crisis in Texas further complicates that decision.
GOP lawmakers quickly denounced the administration’s announcement Friday, saying the measures still were not strong enough to deter the sudden spike in migrants from Central America.
House Speaker John A. Boehner (R-Ohio) called on the White House to send National Guard troops to the Texas border. Rep. Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.), chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, called the administration’s moves “smoke and mirrors” because women and children can “game the system.”
“Many thousands have already been released into the interior of the United States,” Goodlatte said in a statement. “What does President Obama plan to do with those who have already been released from custody?”
Democrats and liberal groups, meanwhile, denounced the new measures as inhumane. A spokesman for Rep. Luis V. Gutierrez (D-Ill.) said he does not support placing women and children in detention facilities as they await appearances before immigration judges.
Joanne Lin, legislative counsel for the American Civil Liberties Union, said that many families “have fled crime and violence in Central America, and have suffered trauma during their treacherous journeys to the U.S. in search of legal protection. Human rights require that detention be the last resort, not the first.” source
Putin orders central Russia forces on 'full combat alert'

Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered troops in central Russia on "full combat alert" for snap drills, the defence minister said on Saturday.
Russia's President Vladimir Putin chairs a meeting at the Novo-Ogaryovo state residence outside Moscow, June 11, 2014.
The order came a day after the Kremlin confirmed it was beefing up its military presence at the border with Ukraine.
"In accordance with his (Putin's) order, from 11:00 am Moscow time (0700 GMT) the troops of the central military district ... have been put on full combat alert," Russian news agencies quoted Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu as saying.
Shoigu added that the troops were ordered on full combat alert after Putin told the military to conduct unscheduled exercises that will last between June 21 to June 28.
Russia's fresh military drills came a day after Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko ordered a unilateral week-long ceasefire in the troubled east of Ukraine.
The Kremlin late Friday slammed Kiev's ceasefire announcement, noting it lacked an invitation to east Ukrainian rebels to begin talks.
Putin's office also demanded an apology from Kiev over the "shooting" of a border post, saying a Russian customs official had been wounded as a result of the incident.
Russia's chief of the general staff, Valery Gerasimov, said more than 65,000 troops, over 180 planes, some 60 helicopters and some 5,500 units of military equipment would be involved in the new drills.
Among key objectives of the drills will be troop movements over long distances, according to Russian news agencies.

Pakistan woman raped and hanged from tree
Posted by : Admin / :
The woman's boyfriend of six months, named by police as Muhammad Saqib, was taken into custody after he confessed to the rape and murder.
Saqib admitted he tried to force the woman -- the daughter of blind parents -- to have sex with two of his friends, according to police. When she refused, investigators said the pair argued.
The woman, whom he allegedly had promised to marry, was found hanging from a tree the next morning.
Police are still looking for the two alleged accomplices.
"The incident occurred in Layyah district (in Punjab province) on Thursday night and was reported to the police on Friday when the local people saw a woman hanging from a tree," senior police official Ghazi Salahudin told AFP.
He said the woman was raped and strangled to death, and then her body was hanged to make it look like a suicide.
"But the branch was so low and the dead body was touching the ground in sitting position," he said.
The woman was the eldest of eight siblings and made a living by farming a small piece of land.
The incident has disturbing similarities to an attack in India last month, in which two teenage girls were found gang-raped and hanged from a mango tree in northern Uttar Pradesh state.
That attack sparked protests over police apathy, and was the latest to highlight India's dismal record on preventing sexual violence. Similar headline-making cases since then have piled pressure on the authorities there.
Pakistani police said Saqib had met the woman after he visited her house in his role as an assistant at a vegetable wholesale shop. They allegedly had been in a relationship for about six months.
A day before the murder, police said, Saqib had brought the woman for a date in the shop where he worked. He took her to the roof, where two of his friends were waiting.
When Saqib tried to persuade the woman to have sex with all three of them, she resisted, according to police.
She was then allegedly raped and killed. Police said Saqib had confessed to the attack, adding that they were still investigating if the woman had been raped by the other men as well.
Though the issues of rape, sexual assault and domestic violence are not as high-profile in Pakistan as they have been in India in recent years, they are widespread in the deeply conservative country.
In March, a 17-year-old Pakistani victim of a gang-rape died after self-immolating in protest at a police decision to turn a key suspect free.
